Pity that this reader is so flat and often stresses the syllables in words and wrong words in a sentence, and what is that strange screech for the "eh!" ?

Singing is a spiritual representation of the pursuit of beauty and perfection. Suicide, a symbol of disillusionment, always shocks. Is it better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all? Technology has blinded man to his basic humanity. Our present era appraises and praises a ruthlessness and callousness in life worthwhile pursuing that is confounding and deplores humility. The Roman sandal is as relevant today as it was yesteryear.

A lengthy description of a man's character - but, to what end? Ditto, the description of the "Desperado" type come to visit the shop keeper. This story seems more like a preface to a novel...except, that the novel is absent.

Though dated , and sometimes voicing prejudices , class/race/sexism, and to our ears now, outmoded, yet Maugham describes cogently, all that made white "English"/Erstwhile Roman Empire colonialism obnoxiously hypocritical and dictatorial, and obviously, now, how deaf and dumb is the foundation of current "norms" clung to in Colonial outposts and the clubs still maintained, secular and religious, still blind to its own errors and faults , and protecting it with arrogant ignorance: it was and remains the pride in prejudice reified by colonial control merchants and social climbers, customarily found advertising their toxic social habits, to whit , drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and sly fornicating with someone or other of the subject "community" they seek to "lord it" over.

I married for the 1st time a wife of 1/2 my age. Her being 25 when I met her and myself being 50. The age gap closes with maturity. Her being 30 when we married and me being 55. Myself having gone thru two diasterous attempts to start a family with less then worthy women who had ruined my reputation and alienated me from my children had left me alone and quite sceptical of any hope of having a chance to fulfill the desire of any normal man. A faithfull wife and a brood of happy children just seemed to be a flight of fantasy. Yet thru divine providence a little baby girl was born on the opposite side of the planet who was abandoned by her parents and raised by her Grandparents and we would be drawn [ together ] ( I've always loved that word )... I'm 66 now and we have 4 beautiful children. 2 boys, and 2 girls. My wife has never given me reason for regret. Never lied to me, and has been the reason for me to get up and face the insurmountable adversity and struggles you couldn't even imagine that I've been thru in the past 4 years.😂 As of now I've been seperated from them running on 4 years do to the Imigration process. While 11 + million Illegals have entered the country 😢 ?

This story will make a helpless feeling echoed in reader's mind. The protagonist planned an advancing budget, then going to a long rest leisure life, is undiputedable and doesn't hurt anybody's interest. "IF" he changed the expenditure strategy. taking $700 than $1000 , monthly, from his annuity, for example. He can last to 70 years old. More aggressively, taking $500 then lasts to 80 years old. The ending would be happiness and no regret in life.
